Can God Change his Mind?
by peacefulpete inis 31:yet he also is wise and will bring disaster and does not retract his words.. 1 sam 15: furthermore, the eternal one of israel does not lie or change his mind, for he is not man who changes his mind.. numbers 23: god is not a man who lies, or a son of man who changes his mind.
does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill?.
when the god you worship pronounces judgement, is he, really just issuing a warning or has the matter been determined through all the godly powers of insight, foresight and perfect judgement?

There are plenty of evolutionary reasons to invent religion. What we see today is a distillation of many similar ideas that eventually harken back to being afraid of the dark. Apparently the humans that could imagine something terrible in the dark lived longer than those that didn’t, which makes sense and reinforces that something terrible lives in the dark. From there it is ghost stories that develop into tribal and later communal knowledge. Not hard to imagine, every child does it.

@peacefulpete: not sure where you get your information, but this is relatively easy to find:
The Biden administration on November 14 extended a sanctions waiver to allow Iran to access upwards of $10 billion in electricity revenue once held in escrow in Iraq.Nov 15, 2023
The Iranian government now has access to $6 billion of their funds to be used for humanitarian purposes as a part of a wider deal that allowed five Americans who had been imprisoned in Iran to go free. Sep 18 2023
Multiple reports also suggest Washington is allowing Tehran to trade $7 billion in International Monetary Fund special drawing rights for fiat currency.
US officials now admit they’re allowing Iranian oil exports to China to skyrocket with estimates ranging from 1.4 to 2.2 million barrels per day flowing in August — their highest levels since President Donald Trump ended America’s participation in the old Iran nuclear deal.
Conservative estimates put this sanctions relief at $25 billion in annual revenue. Iran is now eyeing the transfer of another $3 billion from Japan. (Sep 12 2023).
As far as what Iran did, it was an attempt at killing thousands of Jews, it was an unprovoked attack on sovereign territory, Israel rightly slammed back on Iranian territory in concert with the Saudi and Jordanian military.

Israël did not bomb an embassy, it targeted with a precision rocket strike a military compound. Per international law, you cannot use an embassy as a military base, which Iran does on a regular basis just like Hamas and the UN uses schools and hospitals in Gaza as military compounds in violation of the Geneva convention just so the useful idiots in the West have something to crow about when they get struck.
All that needs to be done is put Iran back under Trump’s economic embargo, instead the Biden admin funded this entire war.

I do get where those stories are coming from though. When I was young, and I did things that perhaps people shouldn't do, I made up excuses and when I was young, it was easy to blame a friend for goading you into doing something bad, later on, it became a bit harder and when a young adult, I used alcohol as a crutch.
But yeah, the whole "my classmates made me do it" and "everyone does it" and "they forced me to do it" is just an excuse teenagers will use for doing things they know they shouldn't be doing and in the cult you can even get a part at the circuit assembly talking about some exaggerated story, I was the one on that platform, although despite my story which started off pretty tame (in reality I talked to a friend and gave them a tract), the thing became produced, they rewrote my story using a WT article trying to make a point and basically the whole thing was an act.

It's a boring talk, he hints at more changes to come (around 18:30) but then admits just because he's from Bethel he doesn't actually know. Basically the whole thing comes down to the argument that there have always been changes, so don't be surprised when there are changes, listen and obey, don't question. Gaslighting, that's all it is.

The US won't retaliate against Iran after Iran attacks Israel, leaves dead 1200 and captures 250 including US citizens, most of them are raped and massacred in captivity. So Iran escalates with 170 attacks on US military bases, including a full blown attack drone strike on Israel leaving several US citizens and military wounded and killed. And the US still won't retaliate.
Speak about the most feckless, anti-semitic President in US history. How long do you think it will take China now to invade Taiwan after this show of force. Even Ukraine is saying they no longer have a chance, that Russia will soon initiate its attacks against major cities. This, people, is what happens when you go with the Obama-Biden policy of cowardice and apology.

@Phizzy: it is interesting to look at the people that praise it vs those that criticize it. Either they are JWs themselves (at least 2 of them), most of them are evangelicals and some others with a specific religious bent. Theological, historical and critical reviews (the majority) all reject the translation. It is ‘a’ translation mostly borrowed from extant English translations.
There is no evidence in my opinion that they actually re-translated from the original languages, which is why the translation feels so wooden (which is the most common critique), it pays no attention to the actual flow of the original language, especially the Hebrew scripture which was itself based on oral tradition and thus is poetic in nature. What I think happened is they took a few interlineair translations and tried to restructure that into an English text and then obviously layered on their own theology which is how you get that result, you lose the original meaning.
This pattern is even more obvious when you look at Kingdom Interlinear, they quite literally copied W&H, changed the words wherever they needed to and then released that as their own. It is also obvious that whenever their teachings have changed over the years, they have released updated Bibles with those changes embedded which wouldn’t happen if you had an accurate translation to begin with, or if the claim is that they honestly re-translate every so often, then more would change than just a few passages.

@slimboyfat: not nearly enough for actually understanding an old book like the Bible which the original text is often incomplete. I’ve done 1 year of Latin and 1 year of Russian, because the latter is a different alphabet, I know enough to know the alphabet, a basic level of grammatical and other structures and how to pronounce the words, a basic conversation (although if you don’t use it frequently, you forget it). But could I read War and Peace in the original language or Cicero, write a translation or thesis, know the meaning and the historical context, no, not even remotely. Most people here speak decent English, many people have taken English literature in college, but even Middle English you will have a hard time understanding and translating the works, especially incomplete ones without at least a PhD level (8 years of hard work) on the subject and even then, it takes a few years to be taken seriously in the field, to get to that level, we are talking 20-25 years of continuous education and immersion in not just the work but also the history, research, peer reviewed papers - there are people that spend their entire careers on a single book, you think WTBTS can just translate the entire Bible, independently, with a 2y starter course from a low grade University? It is obvious from any serious review of their translations that they borrow heavily from other translations and simply inject their own ideas outright.
The WTBTS and many religious types over time, even some people here attempting to do some independent scholarship all suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect. If you want to be taken seriously, there are plenty of places to get independent review from scholars in the field, yet every single one of them is afraid to openly publish as they aren’t going to be taken seriously.

Norway
by St George of England inso the wt society is going to contest the recent norway ruling.. jehovah’s witnesses to appeal unconstitutional ruling in norway (jw.org).
their true colours are shown in the statement: "the decision to deregister jehovah’s witnesses denies us the financial aid and other benefits that the government provides to over 700 registered religious communities in the country.
additional consequences include losing the right to appoint and authorize ministers of jehovah’s witnesses as officiants for weddings.".

Why is WTBTS accepting cash from the government in the first place. Being no part of this world etc etc, they should return the money they receive because money (esp.government money) always comes with strings attached. The strings here is that the government will dictate how they run their organization, which as a donor, is their right to direct how the money is used.
